St. Clair County - January 5, 2000
This UFO incident involved multiple witnesses, which mainly consisted of police officers from a number of small Illinois towns. The officers were able to track the unknown object and maintain radio contact with each other during the event. Adding to this, Scott Air Force Base was only two miles away from the flight path of the UFO. This episode became the focus of intense media coverage, which continued weeks after the actual event.
The first person to notice anything unusual that early morning was Mr. Melvern Noll. Mr. Noll is the owner of a miniature golf course located in Highland, IL, which is approximately 24 miles from St. Louis, MO. During the off-season, Mr. Noll is a truck driver making deliveries at all hours of the day and night. Mr. Noll was returning from a delivery run he had just completed at approximately 4 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 5. Before returning home, he thought he would check his miniature golf course and make sure everything was in order. He parked his truck in the back of the building and began to exit the vehicle. While doing so, he noticed a "bright star" over in the northeast sky. He didn't give it much thought at the time and proceeded to enter the building.
After checking things inside, he locked the building and was returning to his truck. Again, he noticed the "bright star" in the northeast sky. This time, he stopped and observed it more closely. He noticed the light was, in fact, moving in his general direction. In just a few minutes, Mr. Noll noticed the bright white light was only part of a larger object. It appeared to be rectangular in shape. The apparent size of the object was comparable to the size of a football field. Mr. Noll added that the object was also very tall. This object had a series of "windows" that ran down the side. He also noticed two "floors" each having two "windows." These were described as rectangular with an intense white light radiating out from them. The "windows" appeared to be located more toward the rear of the object. When the object was very close, Mr. Noll stated he could see a large number of dim red lights on the bottom. He assumed the exterior color must have been black or dark gray (illus. at right). The description he used to initially describe the object was looking like a "two-story house" in the sky.
During this time, Mr. Noll did not notice any sound, odor, or emission coming from the object. As it moved away to the southwest, Mr. Noll noticed "windows" on the back of the object. He added that these appeared to have a series of lines or bars in them that ran up and down. The object appeared to move in a northeast to southwest direction. The speed was determined to be slow when compared to conventional aircraft. Mr. Noll did state that he recalls the object slowing down as it passed in close proximity to him before regaining speed as it moved away. Mr. Noll estimated the object was possibly a half-mile distant when it moved closest to his location. The altitude was estimated to be approximately 500 feet. The duration of this sighting was estimated to be around 5 minutes in length
Mr. Noll promptly drove his pickup truck to the Highland Police Station. He thought that nobody would believe him, if he told his story. He hoped that the Highland Police could contact a neighboring town's police officer that could verify there was something strange in the sky. The dispatcher at the Highland Police Department listened to Mr. Noll's account and determined that he was a rational individual, despite his unusual claim. She then contacted the Lebanon Police Department. Officer Ed Barton responded to the call around 4:10 - 4:15 a.m.
Officer Barton was initially skeptical upon hearing the transmission. He asked the dispatchers if they were joking. They stated they were not joking. He then proceeded to the north end of town, past Horner Park, on Widicus Road. He did not see anything in the sky at this time. He then followed Widicus Road, as it turns from the North to the East, heading towards Illinois Route 4.
About halfway to Route 4, Officer Barton observed two large, brilliant white lights in the northeastern sky. The lights appeared so close together that Officer Barton thought they were almost touching each other. He stated the lights were so brilliant in intensity that the light rays radiated outward like the symbol of the Japanese Rising Sun battle flag from World War II.
He became curious and decided to drive a little faster. Upon arriving at Illinois Route 4, Officer Barton turned south, heading back towards Lebanon. He was able to observe the lights to his left through his driver's side window as he was proceeding into town.
At some point, as he was alternating between watching the lights and the road in front of him, the two bright lights now appeared to be one bright light. At this point, he switched on his overhead lights. He now believed this could possibly be an aircraft having problems. Upon arriving in town, he made a left turn onto East Route 50. He proceeded east to a bridge at the bottom of the hill. At this point, while he was still driving, he noticed the one bright light now appeared as an elongated cigar-shaped object. The object appeared to be stationary in the sky over the northeast end of the neighboring town of Summerfield. He proceeded along until he stopped his vehicle on the side of the road. He did this because he now noticed the object appeared to be heading in his direction. He stated it was not moving very fast but not very slow either. Upon stopping the vehicle, he turned off all the lights and his squad car's radio in an attempt to hear any noise possibly coming from the object. No noise was evident.
As it approached, he noticed the distinct shape of the object. It appeared as a massive, elongated, narrow triangle. It appeared larger in length than width. The apparent size of the object was conservatively estimated to be approximately 75ft in length and 40ft in width. At each corner, Officer Barton observed a massive, bright, white light. These lights did not waver in intensity and appeared to be pointing straight down. He stated they did not light up the ground, but were very bright. In addition to these, there was one smaller flashing red light. This was situated closer to the two rear white lights, yet in the midline of the object (image at right). He noticed that the object was blotting out the stars above it, as it passed by him. He still could not discern any noise emanating from the object.
At this time, the object appeared to be closest to Officer Barton. He estimated the object was no more than 100 feet distant and approximately 1000 feet above the ground. Then he observed the object rotating in the sky from a southerly heading to that of a southwesterly direction. As it rotated, the object did not bank as is expected of conventional aircraft. Rather, the object pivoted in mid-air without tilting to one side or the other and remained completely level.
At this point, Officer Barton radioed Central Command to tell them what he was observing as well as its current location. In between transmissions, he stopped for a moment as he observed the craft make a dramatic increase in speed. The object was moving at a relatively slow pace at the beginning of his transmission. However, it then accelerated so fast that he could barely track the movement with his eyes. Officer Barton said the speed was remarkable. He was able to observe the rear of the object before this display of velocity.
His best analogy is in comparing it to the Millenium Falcon spacecraft from the motion picture Star Wars. It appeared to be rectangular and illuminated by white light. Through the middle of the light, running lengthwise, was a band of multi-colored illumination. He stated that there were not individual colored lights that you could discern. Rather, it appeared as a band of various colors, which blended into each other. He continued the transmission by informing Central Command that the object should now be around the town of Shiloh that is situated approximately 8 miles to the Southwest.
Officer David Martin of the Shiloh Police Department radioed that he could indeed see something in the sky. Officer Martin was driving on the southern end of Shiloh heading east when he observed the mysterious object. The object appeared to be heading in a westerly direction.
Officer Martin was able to observe three brilliant white lights, which were shining light downward from the object. However, the light did not illuminate the ground or objects on the ground. In addition, small red and green lights were observed on the back end of the object.
At this time, Officer Martin thought the object's altitude was approximately 1000 feet. He estimated the distance from his car to the object was about a quarter of a mile. He thought the object resembled the shape of an extra wide triangle or arrowhead. He estimated the apparent size to be 75-100 yards wide (image at right). Officer Martin was driving slowly during his observations. He also rolled down his driver's side window to determine if the object was emitting any sound. No sound could be heard. He finally decided to pull over to the side of the road and exit the vehicle for a better observation. At this point, the object increased in speed and disappeared in a westerly direction. Officer Martin estimated the object's initial speed to be the equivalent of 15 mph. When it increased in speed, he figured it to be at least 80-100 mph. He states that there was a marked difference in the flight speed.
In the nearby town of Millstadt, IL, Officer Craig Stevens was on patrol and heard the radio traffic regarding this whole affair. His curiosity was aroused and he drove to the east end of Millstadt in an attempt to see this mysterious thing in the sky.
After not seeing anything at that location, he proceeded to Liederkranz Park on the north end of town. While sitting in his car, he observed a very large object that was roughly triangular in shape. Officer Stevens estimated the object to be only 500-1000 feet in altitude. The flight speed was described as extremely slow. He also stated there was no noise with the exception of a "low decibel buzzing sound" that he could barely discern.
As he watched the object, it began moving to the north. He could see the object had a white light on the left side, right side, and center of the back end. In addition, there was a single red light on the bottom. The back end also appeared to be slightly recessed (image at right). At 4:28 a.m., Officer Stevens contacted his dispatcher to advise him that he could now see the object. Then he exited his vehicle and grabbed the Polaroid camera from his squad car's trunk.
He aimed the camera at the object and took a picture. Unfortunately, the extreme cold temperatures of that morning (15-20 degrees Fahrenheit) caused the camera to work poorly. However, he was able to produce one photo, though poor in quality before the object disappeared to the northwest (photo at right).
The last police officer to report seeing the object that morning was from Dupo, IL. I interviewed him personally, but I do not have permission to use his name. This officer also heard the radio traffic that evening and decided to take a look in the sky for himself. Approximately five minutes after Officer Stevens' radio transmission from Millstadt, the Dupo officer observed an array of lights. Contrary to the other officers, this individual stated the object was at a relatively high altitude and proceeding in a north-northeasterly heading. It was so high in the sky that the officer said he wouldn't have noticed it, if it wasn't for all the radio traffic. He stated it stayed to the east of Dupo. The altitude was described as being higher than that of a small plane but lower than that of a commercial aircraft. The officer viewed the object through binoculars, but was only able to see a conglomeration of lights. There were white and red lights visible. The white lights were at the extreme ends. The red lights were in the middle. Aside from the lights, he could not discern any size or shape due to the distance and altitude.
These witnesses provide us with enough data to project the flight path of the object as it traveled over the Southern Illinois area (see map below). It apparently came from the northeast and traveled slowly to the southwest over Highland then south to Summerfield. It then turned and moved towards the northwest and quickly made a flat turn and accelerated to the southwest. It traveled approximately 1 mile north of Scott Air Force Base and slowed as it passed over Shiloh. It then continued to the southwest over the town of Millstadt. From there, it turned to the northwest. Shortly thereafter, it veered to the northeast and apparently gained altitude before leaving the area.
Due to the location of Scott Air Force Base in relation to the UFO sightings, I found it necessary to contact them. Although I was not optimistic, I felt I should pursue every possible source of information. I wrote a letter of introduction and requested answers to four important questions concerning the recent UFO sighting. I promptly received a courteous, albeit uninformative, letter of response.

Information was provided by the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office. They released copies of the dispatch tapes for the morning of Jan. 5, 2000. What follows are the relevant transmissions that pertain to this case:
Dispatcher: Lebanon, this a call from Highland P.D. in reference to a truck driver who just stopped in. He said there was a flying object in the area of Lebanon. It was like a two-story house. It had white lights and red blinking lights, and it was last seen southwest over Lebanon. Could you check the area?
Lebanon officer: Did they say the truck driver was DUI or anything? 10-4, I'm out. . . . Just a quick question. If I happened to find it, what am I supposed to do with it? If I see it, I'm not saying a word. . . . Also be advised the last thing that went over Lebanon -- this was approximately five minutes ago -- was a military cargo plane. It looked like a C-5.. . . Be advised there is a very bright white light east of town. It looks like it's just east of Summerfield, and it keeps changing colors. I'll go over there and see if it looks like an aircraft. It doesn't look like an aircraft, though. . . . It's not the moon, and it's not a star. If you would, will you contact Scott Air Force Base and see if they have anything flying in this area please? Whether it's a plane or not, it's heading westbound now. It should be really close to Scott now. . . . As a matter of fact, if the Shiloh officer looks up, they can probably see it by now.
Shiloh officer: I see something, but I don't know what the heck it is. . . . It's probably heading to Lambert (Field).
Millstadt officer: I've got that object in sight also.
Dispatcher: Are you serious?
Millstadt officer: It's huge.
Dispatcher: . . . Does it look like a -- What does it look like to you?
Millstadt officer: It's kind of V-shaped. It looks like it's possibly headed toward Lambert.
Dispatcher: 10-4. That's what Shiloh said when it was heading towards Fairview Heights.
(One of the officers hums theme song to "Twilight Zone" over his radio.)
Millstadt officer: Really.
Millstadt officer (cont.): Does Dupo have a Polaroid?
Dispatcher: That, I don't know.
Dupo officer: 6004, this is 3923 on County (radio channel) 2.
Millstadt officer: 6004, go ahead.
Dupo officer: I'm not sure what you're seeing. It appears to be pretty high in the area. When I could first see it with binoculars, you could see it was different colors. Now it appears to be white.
Millstadt officer: Is it very large?
Dupo officer: It's hard to tell. It's pretty far off in the distance.
Millstadt officer: This object was above me about 500 feet. And it was huge.
Dupo officer: This thing appears . . . it's probably 20 or 30,000. It's about where planes usually are. It's not low at all
END OF SELECTED RADIO TRANSMISSIONS
I would now like to discuss some particular aspects of this case.
The first concerns the obvious differences in the descriptions given by the witnesses. In examining the figures, we can see there are major disparities between them. The largest difference being the description provided by Mr. Noll as compared to those of the police officers. Mr. Noll describes a large rectangular-shaped object. Less than fifteen minutes later, Officer Barton reports seeing an elongated triangle. The other officers at least report seeing objects that are roughly triangular in appearance.
Beyond differences in shape, we also have radical differences in the lighting configurations that were reported. I believe there are several possibilities for the inconsistencies. The first involves the most prosaic explanation. Namely, witnesses can be wrong in their interpretation of what they claim to have seen. This is a fact all objective UFO researchers must never forget. Is it possible the witnesses made errors in their observations? Of course, that is a distinct possibility. One of the major problems relating to this is the issue of perspective. From what perspective did the witnesses view the object? Some witnesses were stationary while others were driving at the time of their sighting. In particular, Officer Barton's descriptions vary, as he views the object from different distances and angles. To compound matters, the object was moving at various speeds and directions in relation to the observers.
Another explanation for the varied descriptions could be attributed to the notion that there were multiple objects of differing shapes in the sky that night. This would explain why different descriptions were received. I tend to refute this idea due to a couple facts. The terrain around Highland, Summerfield, and Shiloh is extremely flat. On a clear night, like on Jan. 5, you can see for miles in all directions. This is especially true between Highland and Summerfield. If multiple objects were in the sky illuminated by an array of lights, observers would have seen any of them that were there. Also, the timing of the sightings would tend to coincide with the flight of a single object moving from town to town. There were only a few minutes between each sighting, which tends to suggest it was the same object being witnessed from various locations.Yet, a third possible explanation could involve the object actually changing shape in flight. This is one of the more questionable ideas proposed. But, a review of the UFO literature will reveal a multitude of cases which involve objects that appear to change form. I only consider it as a possibility.
Another issue that needs to be discussed is Scott Air Force Base. I find it hard to imagine that a large unknown object with bright lights could fly under 1000 feet within one mile of the base without causing some concerns. I believe they may have more detailed information concerning this event. It is a distinct possibility that the object witnessed was a military craft of some type. Unfortunately, we do not have any evidence to support or refute this idea.
Closing Notes:
I would like to extend my thanks to Peter Davenport of the National UFO Reporting Center for his invaluable assistance in this case. Also, my thanks to all the witnesses that were willing to come forward and share their experiences with us.
In addition, special recognition should be given to Darryl Barker for his outstanding efforts in investigating this case and educating the public through his detailed documentary,
"The Edge of Reality, Illinois UFO Jan. 5th, 2000." This production is the only comprehensive documentary that accurately portrays the events that occurred in the early morning hours of Jan. 5th, 2000.

Tinley Park, IL - August 21, 2004 & October 31, 2004
"The Tinley Park Lights"
Summary of the Preliminary Investigation
"Tinley Park Lights": Refers to a series of sightings in Tinley Park, Illinois between 8/21/2004 and 10/31/2004 where multiple witnesses (more than 100!) viewed three luminous red lights that appeared to emanate from one source and remain in a triangular orientation for the entire duration of the multiple sightings. The lights remained both stationary and also moved slowly around. There was no sound associated with the sighting.
The 10/31 sighting was fantastic in that it occurred at 8:00PM on Halloween night and was viewed by hundreds, if not thousands, of trick-or-treaters and their parents. On two streets alone, at least 50 trick-or-treaters were stopped all looking up at the lights.
Several MUFON investigators were called to investigate the sightings. There were at least 2 meetings held with people who had reported these sightings to NUFORC or MUFON. Digital and film pictures and video were reviewed.
Regarding the 10/31/2004 mass sighting: If this was a triangular-shaped object, based on witness testimony, pictures from various angles, and trigonometry, preliminary calculations are:
- It was approximately 5,000 feet long
- The longest dimensions cover 8 blocks north & south
- Depending on how it rotated, it was 1,500 feet off the ground to 6,500 feet off the ground.
- It hovered at about 4,000 feet above the ground
After careful evaluation and analysis of:
- Randomly selected eyewitness testimony,
- Photographs, both digital and film (there must be hundreds of pictures), and
- Video (there are dozens)
by individuals certified* in:
- Aviation,
- Meterology,
- Physics,
- Astronomy,
- Other applied scientific fields
*Professional insight was limited to their qualifications.
It has been mutually determined to be a genuine sighting of multiple luminous anomalous objects of unknown origin. There is no other rational explanation at this time though the investigation is ongoing.
We, the assigned investigative body of Illinois MUFON make the above statement of summary to this preliminary Investigation.
Respectfully,
Sam Maranto, Director, Illinois MUFON

At 10 p.m. a woman and her grandchildren were startled to hear a loud thunderous roar over their home. The noise was described as sounding like a jet fighter in afterburner. Although loud, the noise did not vibrate the house or fixtures. However, her dogs were frightened by the episode which lasted for several minutes.
Nothing was visible when she initially looked out the window. The woman and her grandchildren then dove into the bathroom for safety due to the noise steadily increasing in intensity. There they remained until the sound subsided.
She did not venture out of the house until the next day. When she did, she noticed several roughly circular depressed areas in her bean field which is situated immediately behind her home. These were not present the prior day. Investigators were notified of this case approximately 2 months after the occurence. The plants did not exhibit any physical characteristics associated with genuine crop circles. Some plants were bent and broken. Geiger counter, tri-field meter, and magnetic particle sampling revealed nothing unusual as was expected due to the time period involved between event and investigation.
A check was made with Scott AFB regarding military activity in the area at the time of the event. Records revealed no military operations at that location and time. A neighbor and her daughter who live approximately a quarter mile away also heard the strange noise but saw nothing. This case remains without an adequate explanation at this time. 7-5-2003 Rend Lake State Park, IL
This UFO sighting occurred between 6pm and 7pm. The sighting involved 3 adult witnesses and one child. The principal adult witness offered testimony to MUFON investigators regarding the incident. According to the witness, he and his wife and daughter along with their friend were attending July 4th festivities at Rend Lake State Park. All of the witnesses were looking up into the sky in the direction of the lake dam to the South. The witnesses along with an estimated 200+ other people were anticipating the final skydive jump for the day, which was to soon take place.
As their attention was focused on the approaching plane used by the skydivers, the witnesses noticed two luminous white objects in the same general portion of the sky. The two objects seemed to be traveling together. They were described as being round to elliptical in shape. The apparent size was estimated to be similar to a golf ball at arm's length. Actual size was estimated to be 11-30 feet. The objects reportedly moved in a straight line from the South/Southwest to the North/Northwest (and directly overhead) at a constant rate of speed that was estimated to be 500mph. The altitude of the objects was estimated to be 10,000 feet. However, the witnesses were not sure of this fact. No sound was heard and the objects left no trails. The witnesses all agreed that the objects were radiating a bright white light rather than simply reflecting sunlight. The color was described as "intense white."
They watched the objects until they disappeared behind the trees on the Northern horizon. Sighting duration was estimated to be 2-3 minutes. Despite all the other people that were present, the witnesses stated that no one else seemed to notice these objects. Weather conditions included clear sunny skies and wind speed averaging 9.5 mph out of the Southwest. This roughly corresponds with the direction of the mystery objects. Back to More Sightings INDEX
9-5-2002 Willowbrook, IL
The two witnesses in this case, a couple, were sitting in their living room prior to the sighting. At 6:45pm the female witness' attention was drawn to the window, due to a helicopter passing over their home. While looking at the helicopter, she noticed another object in the sky that was reflecting sunlight. The male witness also went to the window to observe the same object. Then he grabbed his video camera and proceeded outside with the other witness.
Once outside, the witnesses were looking to the North at approximately a 45-75 degree angle. They began video taping the object while it proceeded from the Northeast to the Southwest. The object's altitude was estimated to be 20,000 feet in a clear sky. The object was described as cigar-shaped or oval-shaped. The colors of the object were described as black and silver with color flashes of green, white, red, and pink. The witnesses stated the object both hovered and moved in a straight line while changing shape. It also was described as reflecting light. No sound was discernable.
After being videotaped for a time, the object moved behind a nearby tree which obscured viewing from the witness' location. At this point, the witnesses ran to the other side of the tree to continue videotaping the object. The witnesses were not able to find the object in the sky after changing their position. As they scanned the sky, they continued to record with their video camera. However, the object never came back into view. It should be noted that the wind direction directly corresponds with the object's flight path (NE to SW).
After reviewing the tape frame-by-frame, it is suspected that the object in question may, in fact, be a cluster of silver mylar balloons. This would account for the reflective surface and the possible illusion of the object changing shape as the cluster moved and rolled across the sky. This suspicion was confirmed by MUFON Video Analyst, Jeff Sainio. Back to More Sightings INDEX

At approximately 4pm, the primary witness had shouted out to his wife who was gardening in the backyard. He had asked her to alert him, if she were to see any UFOs. This was due to the fact that it was coming to the one-year anniversary of his previous UFO sighting (see Bloomington 6/30/01).
At approximately 5pm, the witness stepped out of his house and noticed "a white star about mid-sky descending downward toward the East." This "star" was reportedly closing on a "red star" that was similar to the one he had reported in 2001. At this point, the primary witness drew his neighbor's and three kids' attention to the light in the sky as it "lined up" with the red star. Then it was observed that there seemed to be a "batch of red stars" 5-10 in number to the right of the white and red star. The array then began to drift north in a straight line being led by the white star.
After the neighbor and his children lost interest and left the scene, the principle witness continued to observe the lights for an additional five minutes as they moved to the North. During this time, 4 or 5 "red stars formed into a square (formation) to the right of the lead white star." Then "the square collapsed into an inverted triangle" which "opened up into a square again." Then, according to the witness, "the two ends of the square (formation) to the North began to open up, resembling the dipper part of the Big Dipper."
This entire time, the formation was moving to the North until it was eventually obscured due to the nearby houses and trees. A final detail worth mentioning is that the witness' wife said she didn't see anything during the entire time of the reported sighting. Back to More Sightings INDEX
2-2-2002 Champaign, IL
Between 11:35 and 11:45pm two independent witnesses reported observing unusual orange-amber colored lights that were supposedly over the city.
The first witness, a member of the law enforcement community, had this to say concerning the event: "I was on-duty responding to an alarm call and travelling eastbound down Kirby (Street) approaching the intersection with State Street. I saw the two lights to the left (north) first. I focused on them and then noticed the two lights to the right (south). I have worked the area for four years and never seen them before so my attention was drawn to them. I should also note that the lights were due east of my location and appeared directly above Memorial Stadium. I was unsure what the objects were at first and I thought they may have been a reflection or new lights on the stadium. I also did not think much about them initially because of that reason. I had been scanning the other Police departments in the area (radio traffic) and heard several other officers talking about unidentified objects they were seeing. I then realized the objects I was seeing was probably related. The closer I came to the stadium also made me realize the objects were several hundred feet above it. The four objects hovered in place. I did not see them move or do anything else. I lost sight of them when I turned northbound onto First Street and was close to the base of the stadium. I realized the lights were further to the east and the stadium blocked my view.
Later that night, I telephoned METCAD [a dispatch agency] and learned that several people, including other officers, had reported seeing up to ten unusual lights in the sky. Some believed the lights were from skydivers or parachute flares. Others believed it was the military doing some type of menuevers. I also learned that some buildings had been lit up with spotlights from these objects.
Another important point that I forgot to include was that maybe five minutes after my sighting, I received a computer message from our front desk personnel that (said) someone from an apartment at 308 East Armory (3 blocks north of the stadium) called-in to report ten airplanes using orange running lights to communicate to each other in morse code. I am unsure of the location of that sighting.
One last point, METCAD advised during my previously-mentioned telephone conversation that they had called the local airport (Willard) to see if they could provide any information on the unusual sightings. The airport's reply was that they knew of nothing going on and had nothing on their radar screen. Nothing further to report at this time." The second witness, a college student, provided similar descriptions of the lights that tended to corroborate the officer's statements above. Back to More Sightings INDEX
1-9-2002 Cherry Valley, IL
On 1/9/02 at approximately 6:35pm a single witness observed an unusual object near the town Cherry Valley, IL. The object was described as moving like an airplane. However, the description of the object itself was markedly different from any conventional aircraft.
The witness stated that the object appeared to be oval in shape. The entire surface of the object was described as being made up of many red neon light bulbs which gave off a soft glow and appeared to look like a honeycomb. The reddish color was compared to that of a red stoplight but with no haze around the edges. It had a distinct outline. When first observed, the witness was driving her vehicle and facing in a northerly direction. She observed the object through the windshield of her car.
As she continued to drive and observe the object, she turned to the Southwest and noticed that the object had thin "extensions" that projected out from the object. There were four "extensions" or "legs" according to the witness. They were the same red color as the main body of the object. The object was estimated to be approximately 1/4 to 1/6 the size of a full moon, according to the witness.
It was observed for an estimated 4 minutes. It travelled from the North to the Southwest and passed over the witness' vehicle during this time. The altitude was judged to be over 500 feet. Back to More Sightings INDEX

The witness in this case stated:
"I was driving home from work on Route 51 south from Bloomington to Heyworth around 11:15pm. This is about a ten mile drive. I was about half way home when I noticed three bright lights, side by side, in the sky hovering around the Randolph Grain Elevator. I estimate the object was about 500-1000 feet in the air.
"Curiosity got the best of me, so I turned on Randolph road and proceeded east to check things out. As I got closer, the object was still hovering and the lights were getting brighter. I passed the grain elevator and the object still had not moved. I was getting closer and my cell phone rang and no one was there. I looked later and no incoming call registered in my log on the phone.
"I kept driving and then, all of a sudden, the object darted northeast very quickly and was gone. I checked the flight schedule at the Central Illinois Regional Airport and nothing comes in from the south at the time. The Airport is about 10 miles from the sighting. There is a plane that comes in from Chicago at 11:10. I could see the landing lights as I was stopped on the road.
"I don't know what I saw, as the object appeared to be an oval shape based on the layout of the lights. The cell phone ringing and the way the object left the area is what has made me think I saw something out of the ordinary. Unfortunately, I have no pictures."
The MUFON Investigator stated the following:
"I noted times, distances on various roads, and his estimate of the position and size of the object. Because two and a half months have elapsed since the sighting, the scenery is different, and memories have faded, these angular measurements were rough to make.
"Using a dime and quarter at arm's length, I had Kent tell me roughly how high the object was at different times. While driving his truck, he was able to almost constantly watch the object. He drove mostly south and east over the county roads. Since the object was mostly east of him when he could turn off the main road, I noted that he drove almost exactly a mile in an easterly direction towards it.
"Fortunately, since Kent was moving about a mile toward the object, I had two angles and one side of a triangle. Using trigonometry from this, I was able to roughly estimate that the object was 1.67 miles away from him originally and then 0.67 miles away before it shot off and was gone from sight in less than one second. It was approximately 350 feet up and about 35 feet to 50 feet long. Again, this is a rough estimate and it assumes that the object did not change altitude even slightly during these few minutes. Kent thought the object was stationary the whole time he was trying to approach it until it zoomed off.
"His sighting lasted 3 minutes and 50 seconds plus/minus 10 seconds. The airport is actually 13 miles NNE of him, and he saw the landing lights of the last plane from Chicago arriving at our airport to the north. From what he describes, the pilot of this plane could have had a good view of the UFO as it streaked towards him. Since the object disappeared in less than a second, the pilot in preparing for his landing could have easily not seen it." Back to More Sightings INDEX

At approximately 4:00pm, the reporting witness stated that he stepped outside of his home and noticed a passenger jet flying south-southwest. As he watched the jet, he noticed that it appeared to fly through "a circle of what looked like red stars." According to the witness, the circle was comprised of 7-10 "stars" and was the size of a grapefruit at arm's length. The witness further stated that there was a straight line of stars at the base of the circle. He stated it "seemingly formed the Omega sign."
As the witness observed this, he also noticed what appeared to be a "gray tube swimming lazy clockwise circles within the circle of stars." The witness then had his wife and a houseguest come to look at the spectacle. They also observed this display, according to the witness. He then proceeded across the street to a friend's backyard where there were six people gathered together. He hoped to draw other people's attention to the things in the sky.
According to the witness, no one seemed interested in looking up or listening to him when he mentioned the things in the sky above apart from one couple that seemed interested. During five minutes of observing the "stars" and object, the "stars" gradually moved from their original configuration and spread out in a diffused pattern around the grey tube. The witness decided to retrieve his binoculars from his home and then returned to his friend's backyard.
Upon returning, the witness found that people had set up a telescope in his absence. After a few minutes of viewing the things in the sky, someone drew the witness' attention to directly above their heads. According to the witness, "straight overhead is another spray of stars, perhaps dozens, close to a strange, blob-like morphing mass." The witness further stated that the mass seemed to be "internally-lit and was striped with three colors: yellow, green, and white." According to the witness, "the object was never still and reminded me of some sort of deep sea jellyfish-like creature." To put it in perspective, the witness stated:
"Now we have the tube, continually moving, wriggling, writhing, morphing, folding in on itself, compressing into a ball, elongating again, the amorphous jellyfish mass, flattening, elongating, drawing up on itself, and dozens of what looked exactly like stars about the color of Mars, moving, maneuvering, appearing, fading out, surrounding these two objects."
The witness also mentioned that during the 45 minutes or so the observations were made, 2 or 3 passenger jets flew between the objects and the observers, which gave him the impression that these things were very high and very huge.
Then "the tube and its stars began to drift south, and the amorphous mass and its stars began drifting east, seeming to get higher and higher the further east it went, until it was lost from sight." According to the witness' impression, he felt the two objects were "some type of living creatures." This "golden orb of light" reportedly traveled from the South to the North until it disappeared into a bank of clouds. This sighting lasted approximately 15-20 seconds. Back to More Sightings INDEX
